What is phishing?

Published July 11, 2026 · Updated July 11, 2026 · 4 min read

Phishing is the most common trick behind stolen accounts - on the ordinary web and on dark web clones alike. Recognising it is one of the highest-value skills online.

How phishing works

Phishing uses a fake message or page that impersonates something you trust, hoping you will type your login or personal details. On the dark web, clone directories and mirror sites do exactly this with look-alike addresses.

How to spot it

Watch for urgency, requests for credentials, slightly-off addresses, and anything pushing you to act fast. When a page asks for sensitive data unexpectedly, stop - that instinct is usually right.

The universal defence: never enter credentials or personal data into anything you did not deliberately and independently reach.

Frequently asked questions

How do I avoid phishing?

Never enter logins or personal data from a link you were pushed toward. Verify the source independently.

Is phishing common on the dark web?

Yes - clone and mirror pages use look-alike addresses to harvest whatever you type.
