Ask most people who uses the dark web and they will say "criminals." The real picture is far more ordinary - and more interesting.

The legitimate majority

Journalists use it to protect sources, researchers study censorship, activists communicate under repressive governments, and privacy-conscious people simply avoid tracking. Some large news organisations even run secure drop-boxes there.

And yes, some bad actors
