Why is it called the dark web?

The phrase "dark web" sounds sinister, and that reputation colours how people think about it. But the name is really about visibility, not villainy.

What "dark" actually means

"Dark" refers to content that is not lit up by search engines and cannot be reached with an ordinary browser - it is hidden from normal view, not inherently evil. The opposite is the "surface" web that search engines illuminate.

Why the reputation is overblown

Because the name is dramatic, media coverage focuses on its worst corners. In reality much of it is mundane: privacy tools, forums, and mirrors of ordinary sites. The Hidden Wiki, often mentioned alongside it, is just an unverified index.

A scary name is not evidence. Judge specific sites and links on their merits - and treat every listing as unverified.

Frequently asked questions

Is the dark web all illegal?

No. It has many legitimate uses; some activity is illegal, but that depends on people, not the network.

Who named it?

The term grew from describing content search engines could not "see" - dark as in unlit, not as in criminal.
